Our most frequently asked question is, how can we offer a service that covers such a vast area, in excess of a 70km radius, by road this can mean over 100km (62 miles) in some cases. Travelling north to Valencia (63km), then heading east down the coast to el Campello (97km), almost touching Alicante in the south. We then head inland westward past Elda (92km), sax (83km) out to Caudete (63km), Almansa (62km) and then into the Ayora valley, up to Cofrentes (107km).

This could not be possible, if we had to travel to every client, and give a quote. For example, from our hometown near Xativa to Teulada is a distance of 79km (49 miles) and takes 1 hour 10 minutes, allowing for time to measure the room(s) the round trip would take almost 3 hours, so it would be totally unfeasible.

To this end we had devised a system, by adapting the complex quoting formula developed and used by the respected Paul Rigatti, of Port Charlotte, Florida. This has now enabled us to give a ballpark figure based around square metres.

It allows you to measure your own rooms, and calculate your own quote using our easy to follow guidelines, if you’re happy with your quote, just fill out the easy and convenient form. We will then arrange with you a convenient date when the work can be carried out. Simplicity itself.

But wait a minute, shouldn't you be getting paid for doing our job? We will do better than that, we will give you a 10% discount on your quote, so the more painting work you have done, the more money you will save.

Measuring a room

Make a plan drawing of the room and number the walls, see diagram below.

Make a drawing of each wall roughly to scale, including doors and windows.

Measure the width and height of the first wall, in metres.

Multiply the width and height together to get the total wall area.

If for instance there is a door on that wall, measure the width and height, multiply together and subtract this (door area) from the total wall area. You don't want to pay for something that is not going to be painted.

Repeat the process for all the walls.

Add the totals for all the walls together, to give you the Total Square Metres.

Preparation prior to painting

Where possible we will remove furniture to another room,

Cover and protect floors, and any furniture we're not able to move,

Wash walls, fill minor cracks and holes, remove switch plates,

Painting

Cut in windows, doors, corners etc,

Apply first coat of paint,

Re cut windows, doors, corners etc,

Apply second coat of paint,

If the walls are smooth we charge 4.50 euros per square metre, (35.o5 x 4.50) 157.72 euros.

If the walls have a medium textured finish we charge 5.00 euros per square metre, (35.05 x 5.00) 175.25 euros.

If the walls have a heavy textured finish we charge 5.50 euros per square metre, (35.05 x 5.50) 192.77 euros.

Example Quote: To prepare work area, then walls, prior to painting, then apply two coats of paint. Only 157.72 euros, but don't forget your 10% discount, (15.77 euros), therefore to do all this work, will only be 141.95 euros

Measuring a ceiling

From our plan above we know the ceiling will be 4.00 mts x 5.50 mts, = 22.00 sq mts but there is a cut out (1 sq mt) in the top right corner to be deducted, therefore the total area for the ceiling is 21.00 sq mts.

If the ceilings are smooth we charge 5.50 euros per square metre, (21.00 x 5.50) 115.50 euros

If the ceilings have ornate tiles, see below, we charge 10.00 euros per square metre, these have to be painted by hand, (21.00 x 10.00) 210.00 euros

Example Quote: To prepare work area, then ceilings, prior to painting, then apply two coats of paint. Only 115.50 euros, but don't forget your 10% discount, (11.55 euros), therefore to do all this work, will only be 103.95 euros

Did you ever think it was possible to have a room this size (4.00mt x 5.50mt) professionally painted from top to bottom for under 250.00 euros. (261.67) with 10% discount only 235.50 euros.

You have just saved yourself 26.17 euros, for using a tape measure, pen and paper.

How much paint will I need?

Walls

Using our example above, the total square metres of the walls were 35.05, two coats will be applied therefore the quantity required is 70.10, however you must take into consideration some wastage when loading the rollers, and cutting in uses more paint, therefore you should add 10% (7 sq mts) to the total, so with smooth walls you need sufficient paint to cover 77.10 sq mts.

If your walls are textured add another 10% (7.7 sq mts) to your total, so with textured walls you will need sufficient paint to cover 84.70 sq mts.

Ceiling

Again using the example above, the total square metres of the ceiling was 21.00, 2 coats will be applied therefore the quantity required is 42.00 sq mts, however again add 10% for wastage, (4.20 sq mts) so you will need sufficient paint to cover46.20 sq mts.

If your ceilings consist of ornate tiles, add another 10% (4.62 sq mts) to your total, 50.82 sq mts.

From this example if you have smooth walls and ceiling and are having them different colours, you will need sufficient paint to cover 77.10 sq mts for the walls and 46.20 sq mts for the ceiling. If you are having them the same colour you will need sufficient to cover 123.30 sq mts.

Paints in Spain have the coverage (rendimiento) printed on the tin/bucket.

Tips
To make rooms look taller, keep the walls and the ceiling the same colour.

If your walls are dark and you want to go lighter, it is almost certain you will require 3 coats, with red and yellow notoriously difficult to cover.

What type of paint should I buy?

Generally speaking a good quality matt or satin interior emulsion, (pintura de emulsión).

Matt paint: Water based emulsion that covers well, harder to clean than satin.

Satin paint: Water based emulsion with shiny finish. Resistant to marking. Does not cover as well as matt paints. Shows up any flaws in the walls or ceilings.

Don't skimp on paint, the price difference between cheap and good paint can be as little as 15 euros, but the difference in quality is huge. A small savings up front will cost you more in the long run, with possible fading, and a repaint being required sooner rather than later.

Traditionally in Spain it has been quite difficult to find shops that provide extensive choices for choosing paint. There are still many stores that cannot even provide a sample colour chart to take away.

However, as the demand for interior paints grows, and with the influx of us foreigners, new shops are springing up, (especially in coastal areas) and are offering a more complete range of interior paints.
